June 3, 2022

The Armenian General Benevolent Union commends the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada, the Hon. Mélanie Joly and her predecessor the Hon. Marc Garneau for initiating and materializing the process that resulted with the “Supporting Democracy in Armenia” report by Canada’s Special Envoy to Armenia.

AGBU extends its immense gratitude to the Hon. Stéphane Dion for this crucial report which highlights the strategic importance of strengthening fragile democracies through education, culture, trade and governance.
As Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada (2006-2008), Mr. Dion had publicly pledged to open a Canadian Embassy in Yerevan should he be elected Prime Minister.

An exemplary parliamentarian and now diplomat, Dion reaffirms his position, which would redefine the already-friendly Canada-Armenia relationship.

This comprehensive report identifies all avenues to promote robust bilateral affairs between the two countries. It is imperative now that its recommendations be followed, and not be shelved. Our community expresses its readiness to assist in making sure this report’s recommendations become reality.

AGBU will work to achieve this end goal and is ready to cooperate will all parties to enhance and truly strengthen the bilateral relations between Canada and Armenia.
